  • About This Program

The Big Read in Charlotte is a five-month-long series of free events designed to inform, engage, and promote literacy in our community – centered on the community-wide reading Yaa Gyasi’s novel, ;Homegoing. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience.

Charlotte is one of 62 communities nationwide participating in the 2023-2024 NEA Big Read. From February 3 through June 27, 2024, our community celebrates Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi with a full calendar of events, in partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Cabarrus County Library, and J. Murrey Atkins Library at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte).
