  • About This Program

Umfundalai (pronounced “um-foon-duh-luh”) offers a movement experience in African culture without the strictures of ethnically-bound traditions; it respects tradition without being ‘traditional’. With the rituals and customs of various African peoples as its artistic wellspring, Umfundalai empowers the dancing artist with movement and song to create his or her own ‘Africa’. With a contemporary lens and a systematic pedagogy, Umfundalai opens African dance to anyone and everyone who enters the Bantaba. Certified Instructor Ashley Suttlar Martin will lead participants in this highly respected dance genre created by scholar and choreographer, Dr. Kariamu Welsh. Come join the Bantaba.
