Family First: African Dance Experience

Led by Elsie Mufuka of MufukaWorks Dance Company

African dance workshop! Take a journey through the history of African dance, particularly how we moved our bodies in celebration and healing. Accompanied by the sounds of drums, we focus on freedom in movement! Elsie will guide participants through simple but expressive dance choreography, after which all can perform as a collective. Please be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the experience, with enough water for the family to stay hydrated.

This workshop is open to all ages and all levels.

Elsie Mufuka is originally from Gardens Corner, SC. The blood that runs through her veins is from Zimbabwe, Africa. Mufuka’s pre-professional training is credited to Shannon Kelly of Kelly Studios in Georgia. Mufuka's education includes Masters of Arts Administration from Winthrop University and Coker College of dual Bachelor of Art degrees in Dance under the direction of Angela Gallo and Dr. Wanda Ebright and Communications, some of her references are The Amy Marshall Dance Company residency of New York City, The Wanda Project, and Choreographer/Mentor Natty Mncube. After her undergraduate completion, she accepted her first professional opportunity in Johannesburg, South Africa with Ntosana Contemporary Dance Theatre director Sello Pesa. Mufuka worked with this company as well as Taelo Dance Theatre-Gustin Makgeledisa, DTL Entertainment-Tumie Letsoenyo, and Lorcia Cooper.
