The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture exists to present, preserve and promote African American art, culture and history for the education and enlightenment of all.

Building appreciation and participation in the arts, history and culture is embedded in the mission of the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture's Education and Outreach Department. Our goal is to educate and enlighten the communities we serve regarding the art, culture and history of African-Americans in North Carolina, and globally. It is our intention to stimulate interest in the creative contributions African-Americans have made to world culture and inspire life-long learning. We are here to educate and inform, generate interest in the creative process, encourage critical thinking, inspire curiosity and imagination and provide opportunities for new insights.

Education and Outreach at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture achieves its mission by providing a comfortable, non-competitive environment where participants of all ages can engage in hands-on activities led by arts professionals, exposing visitors and community members to a wide variety of art mediums and stimulating cultural concepts and inspiring creative expression, supporting academics and exploring character education traits through interactive programming.

Through Education and Outreach Programming at the Harvey B. Gantt Center, students will enhance their understanding of the relationship of arts to learning and academic achievement and look at museum visits, art, exhibitions and interaction with artists as on-going opportunities for exposure to the importance, validity and necessity of self-expression. Students will think of interaction with the arts as a catalyst for different ways of seeing, relating to and knowing the world and leave with authentic reasons to discuss art, history and culture.

As we continue to create and promote meaningful programs for Gantt Center visitors and the greater Charlotte community we believe in the talent, creativity and energy of artists, children, youth and families and the contributions they make to our communities. We embrace the power of collaboration and communication with people of all backgrounds. We encourage innovative, thoughtful decision making and continuous improvement and foster a caring, creative and dynamic work environment.
