About the Summer Internship Program
The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts & Culture offers summer internships for undergraduate college students. Interns work approximately 10 hours per week from late May through early August 2010. At the end of the summer, each student will give an oral presentation to museum staff and write a paper on his or her project.
Students will learn about careers in the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts & Culture and about the many aspects of museum operations, work on meaningful projects under the guidance of experienced professionals and develop mentor relationships and share experiences with museum professionals who can advise and support you as you pursue your educational goals and career plans.
Eligibility
Undergraduates who are enrolled as sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible. Students from any major area of study who are enrolled in a four-year degree program are eligible, as are second-year students in two-year programs who plan to continue their education at a four-year program. Priority is given to students enrolled in colleges and universities in the greater Charlotte area, to students enrolled at colleges and universities in North Carolina, and North Carolina residents attending school out of state.
Position Description
The intern will work across the Education & Outreach Department. Major responsibilities include organizing and coordinating various educational and community outreach programs. The intern will coordinate volunteers and educators related to Education programs, and will help to administer programs across the department. This intern will be responsible for office tasks such as managing art supply inventory and orders, documenting programs and partnerships, taking reservations for programs, and transcribing materials for exhibitions. The Intern will provide support to the Academic Programs area of the Education & Outreach Department. Tasks include coordinating weekly workshops in the Learning Center, assisting in research and set-up for various programs, and liaising with program participants, Gantt Staff and volunteers. The intern will learn all of the details implicit in making a program run successfully, including marketing.
Requirements
The ideal candidate must have an interest in Education & Outreach art museum programming, enjoy interacting with the public, and have experience working with culturally diverse persons within and outside the community. The candidate should have the ability to multi-task, be extremely organized, and be able to successfully execute both administrative and research-oriented projects. The intern works collaboratively and helps to create new ways for audiences to engage in African-American art and culture. The position requires a candidate who enjoys working in a team-environment and has the ability to confront last-minute, logistical or personnel challenges with ease.
