Our Art, Our Culture: A Museum Scavenger Hunt

Using a wide range of materials, subjects, sounds and images, African-American artists showcased at the Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture challenge viewers to reflect on artistry and history through exhibitions that reveal local and global experiences. During a guided tour, groups are divided into teams and provided with clues leading to images and artifacts. Working together, participants will solve a series of challenging brain teasers while making their way to the big payoff, earning the most points and learning about African-American history and culture. In the spirit of friendly competition, “Our Art, Our Culture: A Museum Scavenger Hunt” brings history to life.

Approximate Length of Experience: 1 hour
Minimum/Maximum Number of Participants: 1-25
Availability: Self-guided experience available Tuesday - Sunday. Reservations required two weeks in advance for guided tour.
Cost: Groups of 10 or more are $12 per person for guided tours (includes Museum admission)

Portraits, Images & Masks

In cultures around the world masks are created for use in important occasions and ceremonies. The more important the occasion is to a society, the more powerful the mask. Using a variety of materials, participants will create a three-dimensional textured mask while exploring the similarities of mask making from diverse cultures. The experience includes a guided tour of the current exhibitions at the Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture.

Approximate Length of Experience: 1.5 hours
Minimum/Maximum Number of Participants: 10-25  
Availability: Reservation required two weeks in advance or check Gantt schedule for when activity is part of regular programming.
Cost: Groups of 10 or more $30 per person (includes Museum admission)

Canvas and Cocktails

Explore artistic talents with hands-on, step-by-step instruction from local artists while sipping wine. Participants bring the creativity and the Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture provides art supplies, beverages and an instructor who will provide step-by-step instructions to recreate a featured painting, still life, colorful mask or Romare Bearden inspired collage. Featured projects will exemplify techniques, materials and imagery from the African Diaspora.

Minimum/Maximum Number of Participants: 10 – 25  
Availability: Reservation required two weeks in advance.
Cost: $40 per person for a two-hour class plus cost of beverages
