About This Program
A conversation about the movie Waist Deep + The Girl of the West opera
Waist Deep is a 2006 drama-action film directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall starring Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good. It is loosely based on the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde, in which the two main characters are on the road, trying to avoid police, and committing bank robberies together.
The Girl of the West (La fanciulla del West) was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1910. The girl runs a saloon and bank in Old California where she falls into the arms of a stranger whose only known profession is a bank robber.
What do the film Waist Deep and the classic opera The Girl of the West have in common? For starters, both narratives are set in the American West. Both stories are centered around strong female leads, and in both the movie and the opera, our female protagonist continuously attempts to save her troubled bank robber love interest.
Hip Hop Orchestrated has brought the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, Opera Carolina and WDAV Classic Public Radio together for two weekends of film, opera and conversation.
